The relationship between spatial density and size of plants is an important topic in plant ecology. The self‐thinning rule suggests a ?3/2 power between average biomass and density or a ?1/2 power between stand yield and density. However, the self‐thinning rule based on total leaf area per plant and density of plants has been neglected presumably because of the lack of a method that can accurately estimate the total leaf area per plant. We aimed to find the relationship between spatial density of plants and total leaf area per plant. We also attempted to provide a novel model for accurately describing the leaf shape of bamboos. We proposed a simplified Gielis equation with only two parameters to describe the leaf shape of bamboos one model parameter represented the overall ratio of leaf width to leaf length. Using this method, we compared some leaf parameters (leaf shape, number of leaves per plant, ratio of total leaf weight to aboveground weight per plant, and total leaf area per plant) of four bamboo species of genus Indocalamus Nakai (I. pedalis (Keng) P.C. Keng, I. pumilus Q.H. Dai and C.F. Keng, I. barbatus McClure, and I. victorialis P.C. Keng). We also explored the possible correlation between spatial density and total leaf area per plant using log‐linear regression. We found that the simplified Gielis equation fit the leaf shape of four bamboo species very well. Although all these four species belonged to the same genus, there were still significant differences in leaf shape. Significant differences also existed in leaf area per plant, ratio of leaf weight to aboveground weight per plant, and leaf length. In addition, we found that the total leaf area per plant decreased with increased spatial density. Therefore, we directly demonstrated the self‐thinning rule to improve light interception.  相似文献

The morph ratio distribution in polymorphic species often varies clinally, with a gradual change in morph ratios across the distributional range of the species. In polymorphic bird populations, clinal variation is rarely quantified. We describe a cline in the morph ratios of Black Sparrowhawks across South Africa, which is principally driven by a higher ratio of dark morph birds in the newly colonized southwest of the country. Across the 1400 km of our cline, the probability of a bird being a dark morph declined from over 80% close to the Cape Peninsula to under 20% in the northeast. Higher frequencies of dark morphs were associated with a higher proportion of rainfall falling during the winter breeding months. Further investigation revealed relationships between the proportion of dark morphs and altitude, amount of rainfall during the breeding months, and an interaction between this variable and temperature. These results provide some support for the suggestion that the higher frequency of dark morphs in the southwest is an adaptive response, rather than the result of a founder effect or genetic drift. These findings also suggest that, in theory, polymorphic species may be better adapted to cope with the challenges of climate change or may be able to expand their ranges more quickly into novel climatic areas, since selection pressure can act on a pre‐existing trait that may be beneficial in new conditions.  相似文献

The chain-breaking antioxidant activities of eight coumarins [7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin (1), 5,7-dihydroxy-4-methylcoumarin (2), 6,7-dihydroxy-4-methylcoumarin (3), 6,7-dihydroxycoumarin (4), 7,8-dihydroxy-4-methylcoumarin (5), ethyl 2-(7,8-dihydroxy-4-methylcoumar-3-yl)-acetate (6), 7,8-diacetoxy-4-methylcoumarin (7) and ethyl 2-(7,8-diacetoxy-4-methylcoumar-3-yl)-acetate (8)] during bulk lipid autoxidation at 37 °C and 80 °C in concentrations of 0.01–1.0 mM and their radical scavenging activities at 25 °C using TLC–DPPH test have been studied and compared. It has been found that the o-dihydroxycoumarins 36 demonstrated excellent activity as antioxidants and radical scavengers, much better than the m-dihydroxy analogue 2 and the monohydroxycoumarin 1. The substitution at the C-3 position did not have any effect either on the chain-breaking antioxidant activity or on the radical scavenging activity of the 7,8-dihydroxy- and 7,8-diacetoxy-4-methylcoumarins 6 and 8. The comparison with DL-α-tocopherol (TOH), caffeic acid (CA) and p-coumaric acid (p-CumA) showed that antioxidant efficiency decreases in the following sequence:  相似文献

Aim Ecogeographical ‘rules’, large‐scale patterns in ecological variables across geographical space, can provide important insights into the mechanisms of evolution and ecological assembly. However, interactions between rules could obscure both the observation of large‐scale patterns and their interpretation. Here, we examine a system of three variables interrelated by ecogeographical rules – the latitudinal increase in body size within closely related homeotherms (Bergmann’s rule), the negative allometry of clutch size (Calder’s rule) and the latitudinal increase in clutch size (Lack’s rule) – in a global dataset of birds. Location Global. Methods We used linear regressions and meta‐analysis techniques to quantify the three rules across clades and through the taxonomic hierarchy. Path analysis was used to quantify interactions between rules at multiple taxonomic levels, as a function of both phylogenetic inheritance of traits and indirect feedbacks between the three rules. Independent contrasts analyses were performed on four clades with available phylogenies, and the taxonomic partitioning of variation in each trait was quantified. Results Standardizing across all clades, Lack’s and Bergmann’s rules were supported at all taxonomic levels, with Calder’s rule being supported at the order level. Lack’s rule was consistently stronger and more often detected than the other two rules. Path analysis showed that the indirect effects often outweighed the direct effects of Calder’s rule at the genus level and Bergmann’s rule at the order level. Strong interactions between Calder’s and Bergmann’s rules led to a trade‐off between the rules depending on taxonomic resolution. Main conclusions We found strong interactions between Bergmann’s, Lack’s and Calder’s rules in birds, and these interactions varied in strength and direction over the taxonomic hierarchy and among avian clades. Ecogeographical rules may be masked by feedbacks from other, correlated variables, even when the underlying selective mechanism is operating. The apparently conflicting pairwise relationships among clutch size, body size and latitude illustrate the difficulty of interpreting individual pairwise correlations without recognition of interdependence with other variables.  相似文献

Although chloroplast protein stability has long been recognised as a major level of post‐translational regulation in photosynthesis and gene expression, the factors determining protein stability in plastids are largely unknown. Here, we have identified stability determinants in vivo by producing plants with transgenic chloroplasts that express a reporter protein whose N‐ and C‐termini were systematically modified. We found that major stability determinants are located in the N‐terminus. Moreover, testing of all 20 amino acids in the position after the initiator methionine revealed strong differences in protein stability and indicated an important role of the penultimate N‐terminal amino acid residue in determining the protein half life. We propose that the stability of plastid proteins is largely determined by three factors: (i) the action of methionine aminopeptidase (the enzyme that removes the initiator methionine and exposes the penultimate N‐terminal amino acid residue), (ii) an N‐end rule‐like protein degradation pathway, and (iii) additional sequence determinants in the N‐terminal region.  相似文献

Given the well‐documented fact that human body proportions covary with climate (presumably due to the action of selection), one would expect that the Ipiutak and Tigara Inuit samples from Point Hope, Alaska, would be characterized by an extremely cold‐adapted body shape. Comparison of the Point Hope Inuit samples to a large (n > 900) sample of European and European‐derived, African and African‐derived, and Native American skeletons (including Koniag Inuit from Kodiak Island, Alaska) confirms that the Point Hope Inuit evince a cold‐adapted body form, but analyses also reveal some unexpected results. For example, one might suspect that the Point Hope samples would show a more cold‐adapted body form than the Koniag, given their more extreme environment, but this is not the case. Additionally, univariate analyses seldom show the Inuit samples to be more cold‐adapted in body shape than Europeans, and multivariate cluster analyses that include a myriad of body shape variables such as femoral head diameter, bi‐iliac breadth, and limb segment lengths fail to effectively separate the Inuit samples from Europeans. In fact, in terms of body shape, the European and the Inuit samples tend to be cold‐adapted and tend to be separated in multivariate space from the more tropically adapted Africans, especially those groups from south of the Sahara. Divergent adaptive selection is a prominent mechanism influencing patterns of morphological diversity. We used the juniper titmouse [Baeolophus ridgwayi (Richmond, 1902)], a nonmigratory passerine that inhabits woodlands throughout western North America, to investigate variation in bill morphology in relation to diet and geography. We gathered data from museum specimens and used morphometric techniques to determine the relative strength of support for competing hypotheses using information theoretics: (1) differences in bill morphology are predicted by a key winter food resource that each regional population consumes (seeds of different juniper tree species); or (2) bill morphology scales with body size, and both increase along a latitudinal gradient. Juniper species emerged as the variable with the most support explaining variation in bill size, supporting the hypothesis that seed sizes influence bill size, independently of body size. The shape analysis revealed no distinct patterns in bill shape variation, but employed a powerful method for evaluating the strength of support for numerous candidate models. The differences in bill size of juniper titmice across their range are likely to reflect adaptive variation, because bill morphology is highly heritable in birds, juniper titmouse gene flow appears to be relatively low, and there is a clear mechanistic explanation for why bill sizes may differ among the ranges of the three juniper species. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 101 , 667–679.  相似文献

A phylogenetic comparative analysis of geographic variation in body size of an obligately hibernating marmotine species (Anatolian ground squirrels, Spermophilus xanthoprymnus) is presented in relation to environmental variables that pertain to four principal hypotheses (heat conservation, heat dissipation, primary productivity, and seasonality hypotheses). Adult Anatolian ground squirrels (78 males and 90 females) were collected from ten geographic localities in Anatolia for use in morphometric analyses. First, the study tested whether significant variation in body size occurs over the geographic range of S. xanthoprymnus. Then, to understand the possible cause(s) of the observed pattern of geographic variation in body size of Anatolian ground squirrels, four hypotheses were tested, separately and simultaneously, using a phylogenetic comparative method. Overall, food availability (primary productivity hypothesis) and, especially in males, over‐winter fasting endurance (seasonality hypothesis) are likely the primary underlying mechanisms generating the observed pattern of increasing body size towards colder, more seasonal environments, with higher summer precipitation and productivity (or a Bergmannian size pattern). © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100 , 695–710.
